Introducing The Stylight Menswear Report: What men are buying

Menswear is having a moment, but then again, when is it not? While the lion’s share of industry & media attention tends to favour female fashion, the menswear industry is still worth an estimated $402 billion worldwide (Fashion United); something worth paying attention to, wouldn’t you say?

A study conducted by American Express and Nectar found that, on average, men spend 43 per cent more on clothing every month than women. That figure, coupled with evolving ideas of masculinity & fashion, blows open the door for menswear designers and the industry as a whole.

For our Menswear Report, we analyzed data from our 12 million monthly users to determine what men are looking for in 2019.

By looking at data from the past six months (January 2019 to June 2019), our team evaluated keyword searches, sales data and our most-visited menswear pages to determine which the trends saw an increase in traffic and overall interest.

From this data, we present the inaugural Stylight Menswear Report: What men are buying.

TREND #01

White Crew Socks

Now presenting: The unlikely return of the crew sock. No longer resigned to a life of racquetball games and bulk Costco buys, the crew sock, against all odds, has become a sought-after designer item this year.

Between Off-white and Gucci, Vetements and adidas, the mid-calf sock saw a 235% search increase on Stylight in the first six months of the year; with customers paying as much as USD $180 for a pair of Gucci socks and $90 for Off-white.

Printed Shirts

Be it floral, striped, geometric, or covered in early Renaissance art (courtesy of Ih Nom Uh Nit), 2019 has seen close to a 500% increase in the demand for printed shirts.

Among the most sought-after brands are Off-white, Ralph Lauren, Dsquared2, and Champion.

Linen Suits

Coming out on top of the menswear trends is the linen suit.

With an extraordinary 950% search increase for “linen suits” between January and June 2019, consumer appetites for the summer fabric have exploded.

Among the most-searched brands: Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Esprit.

The most sought-after sneakers

While crew socks, printed shirts, and linen suits have risen in the search ranks over the past six months, there’s no denying that when it comes to menswear, sneakers are king.
