THE MOST WANTED JACKETS / COATS FOR FALL
Autumn/Winter Coat Trend Report 2020
New season, new trends. Despite, or perhaps even because of the current situation, online shoppers already seem to be focusing fully on their autumn wardrobe. We have analysed the shopping and surfing behaviour of our Stylight users and found that they are slowly turning away from summer styles and are now concentrating on autumn coats and jackets. But which trends will dominate outerwear in 2020? We see the return of classic styles such as double-breasted coats and belted coats, as well as Boho styles with fringe, but also some rather unexpected trends such as leather trench coats. With great pleasure, we present you the 5 autumn/winter trends of 2020.
TREND #1 FRINGE
Boho-chic is one of the big trends for the new season. And what would Boho be without fringe? On the runways of the A/W 2020/2021, it was almost impossible to find a show without fringe details. This dynamic eye-catcher was used everywhere: from shoes to dresses to bags, and of course, jackets, vests and coats. While Prada showed us a fancy fringe look, Dior presented a more rustic version. The 12 million monthly users on Stylight confirm the incredible trend: Compared to last year, clicks on fringe jackets have increased by over 1000%.
TREND #2 RETURN OF THE CLASSICS
The return of great classics was inevitable. Long coats with clean lines and details that make a statement: the double row of buttons, wide lapels and belt-cinched waist that perfectly envelop the feminine silhouette. The classic double-breasted coat will be one of the most sought-after styles for coats and jackets in autumn 2020, with a 209% increase in clicks compared to 2019, not to mention belted coats, which show a 520% increase in clicks compared to last year. Not too surprising, because from Fendi to Dior, Max Mara to Prada, Isabel Marant to Miu Miu, versions of the double-breasted coat are cropping up everywhere.
TREND #3 LEATHER TRENCH COATS
Making an appearance on the catwalks of Miu Miu, Saint Laurent and Loewe, the leather trench coat is establishing itself as one of the must-haves this autumn. Whether you prefer it in dark brown, cognac, chocolate brown or plain black (Matrix style) – it is an integral part of our autumn wardrobe. Compared to last year, we are already seeing a 698% increase in clicks on leather trench coats. For those who are not quite as brave yet or don’t want to spend a lot of money on a leather trench coat, here is some good news: Even the classic beige trench coat (think: Burberry) is making a big comeback with a 140% increase in clicks.
TREND #4 CAPES AND VESTS
A very special trend this year is the absence of sleeves; more precisely we are talking about capes & vests. Capes are the epitome of autumn fashion. They are elegant, mysterious and inspire us again and again with their timelessness. At the Autumn/Winter Show 2020/2021 in Paris, Isabel Marant showed a variety of great capes in clean colours. Compared to last year, we could already see a 63% increase in clicks on capes on Stylight.
The same is true for vests, which will be worn quite differently in autumn and winter 2020. Apart from the sporty puffer version, as seen in Dior’s Autumn/Winter show, long, straight cut vests, like those from Valentino, are especially popular. Here too, we see a 52% increase in clicks compared to last year.
TREND #5 PLAID AND TARTAN PATTERNS
Checkered coats and jackets are an integral part of autumn and winter fashion almost every year. But this year, very special checkered patterns are in demand: plaid & tartan. The historical plaid pattern, also known as tartan, is characterised by lines in a checkerboard structure woven into a fabric using multiple colors. You could already see this pattern popping up at the shows of Etro, Marc Cain, Miu Miu and Michael Kors. This autumn, the pattern will not only adorn coats, but also capes, vests and blazers. At Stylight we saw a 451% increase in clicks on coats and blazers with plaid and tartan patterns.
